> History
The National Investment Corporation of Cameroon (SNI) was set up in 1964 as a public corporation, with the State as sole shareholder, for the mobilization and orientation of national savings and any other national and international financial resources. It has a capital of 22,000 million CFA F.
Triumphal march
During the early years following independence, when Cameroon
was in the very first stage of economic development, there
was a total lack of human resources and no national private
sector that could promote the development of a private production
sector. The country enjoyed some political autonomy, but
the entire banking system was outwardly oriented.
The SNI came into existence within
this context in 1964.
In the early years following independence, the Government
of Cameroon, convinced of the important role the private
sector can play in the economic development of any country,
mobilized adequate resources to implement its industrial
policy.
The engine for that is the National Investment Corporation.
Its open-ended capital comes principally from the State,
as well as earnings issuing of development bonds, proceeds
from its own transactions or issues, proceeds from its operations,
from interest on loans and endowments, subsidies, gifts
and legacies.
The SNI is financially autonomous
and its activities are directed to the private sector.
Its mission is to mobilize, peg and direct national savings
to support economic and social investment operations. The
SNI intervenes in industry, agriculture and trade sectors.
The new structure is therefore expected to:
conduct
studies and all such financial transactions liable to promote
the country’s development;
grant
loans or guarantees to finance investments with specific
economic or social interests;
purchase
or repurchase company shares;
manage
portfolios of the State, councils and public establishments.
The long-term goal is to temporarily make up for the absence
of national private promoters by setting up projects which
will be sold later to Cameroonians exclusively.
The corporation was officially set up on 16 December 1964,
with Mr. Jean Faustin BETAYENE as the Chief Executive Officer.
SNI plays a key-role amongst national economic development
actors. In view of the context in which it was born, it
has successfully gone round an obstacle course. The corporation
has, over the years, adapted to changes in the business
world and has acquired a wealth of experience and perfect
mastery of project investment and financing facilities.
